Distress Tolerance

Lesson 1 of 9

Build your STOP card

About 5 min

The goal

Make the STOP skill automatic by rehearsing it before you need it.

Do it step by step

  1. 1

Write STOP on a card or phone note: Stop, Take a step back, Observe, Proceed mindfully.

  2. 2

Pick a mild everyday annoyance (a slow queue, a dropped call) and run STOP on it, out loud if you can.

  3. 3

Notice what "take a step back" looks like for your body — a breath, unclenching hands, physically stepping away.

  4. 4

Keep the card where you'll see it. Rehearsing on small stuff builds the muscle for big stuff.

For parents

Agree on a shared signal (a word or gesture) that means "I'm doing STOP" so family members give space instead of pushing.
