Distress Tolerance

Lesson 2 of 9

The cold water reset

About 3 min

The goal

Practise the Temperature part of TIPP as one body-based option for lowering intense arousal.

Do it step by step

  1. 1

Safety first: ask a healthcare professional before trying cold-water skills if you have a heart or medical condition, a low resting heart rate, take heart-rate-lowering medicine, have an eating disorder, or react badly to cold.

  2. 2

Use cool water — not ice-cold water — and hold your hands under it or splash your face for 15–30 seconds.

  3. 3

Focus only on the sensation: the cold, the temperature change on your skin.

  4. 4

Breathe out slowly as you do it.

  5. 5

Notice how your body feels afterwards. Stop if you feel dizzy, unwell or uncomfortable; another TIPP option may suit you better.

For parents

In a hard moment, offer the reset without commentary: "cold water?" and nothing else. Save all talking for after.
