Distress Tolerance

Lesson 3 of 9

Make a self-soothe kit

About 10 min

The goal

Prepare comfort for all five senses in advance, so it's there when thinking is hard.

Do it step by step

  1. 1

Gather one item per sense: something soft to touch, a calming sound or song, a nice smell, a comforting taste, a soothing thing to look at.

  2. 2

Put them together in one box, drawer, or phone playlist.

  3. 3

Try the kit once when you're calm, so your brain learns the route.

  4. 4

Review it monthly — swap out anything that's stopped working.

For parents

Help gather the kit without judging the choices. A teen's soothing items may look odd to you — what matters is that they work for them.
