Lesson 3 of 9
Opposite action, small edition
About 5 min
The goal
Try acting opposite to an emotion's urge in a low-stakes situation.
Do it step by step
- 1
Notice an urge this week: to withdraw when sad, to avoid when anxious, to snap when angry.
- 2
Ask: does the emotion fit the facts? If not, plan the opposite move.
- 3
Do a small version: send one message instead of isolating, stay in the room five more minutes, speak softly instead of snapping.
- 4
Afterwards, note what happened to the feeling. Opposite action works by repetition, not willpower.
For parents
Celebrate the attempt, not the outcome. "You stayed in the room even though you wanted to leave — that took something."
